How to answer THIS tricky job interview question

how to answer this tricky job interview question

What do you do?

If you’ve had abbreviated tenure at in your last several roles, you may be asked ๐Ÿ‘‡this tricky job interview question in an interview:
๐‚๐š๐ง ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐š๐ฅ๐ค ๐ฆ๐ž ๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ ๐ก ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ?

Smile. ๐Ÿ˜€
It’s your lucky day! ๐Ÿ€
Because this tricky job interview question is a golden opportunity! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐šƒ๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š๐š’๐š›๐šœ๐š ๐š๐š‘๐š’๐š—๐š ๐š๐š˜ ๐šž๐š—๐š๐šŽ๐š›๐šœ๐š๐šŠ๐š—๐š ๐š’๐šœ ๐š’๐š—๐š๐šŽ๐š—๐š.

It’s a good question to be asked.
๐Ÿ‘It really is.

The purpose is to get a better idea of your working skills and how you might apply those to ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ position.

The interviewer likely isnโ€™t insinuating anything with this question because, frankly, most employers donโ€™t actually care why you left other jobs.

Because theyโ€™re not interviewing you for a job you ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ to have.

๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜†’๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ the job you want. ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ท๐—ผ๐—ฏ.

๐™ฐ๐š—๐š ๐š๐š‘๐šŽ ๐š ๐šŠ๐šข ๐š๐š˜ ๐š‘๐šŠ๐š—๐š๐š•๐šŽ ๐š’๐š – ๐š’๐šœ ๐š ๐š’๐š๐š‘ ๐š๐š˜๐šŒ๐šž๐šœ

Anytime you get asked to โ€˜walk me throughโ€™ your last jobs, focus on ONE thing and ONE thing only – what you did/produced/learned/valued most at X job ๐˜ข๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ต ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ Y position you’re interviewing for.

๐Ÿ‘‰Again – they’re interviewing you for their role, not for one you left.

Anything they ask is designed to get information relevant to ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ role and how you will bring value to it.

And, don’t worry about being tagged a job hopper.๐Ÿธ

There was a time when that was a bad thing.
I call them โ€˜the before timesโ€™ or, simply, โ€˜the olden daysโ€™.

Average employment tenure now hovers somewhere between 2-4 years, depending on age, industry and other factors.

And, honestly, most employers don’t care about that.
The ones that do clearly value some sort of undeserved and unreciprocated loyalty more than the tangible value the employee brings to the role.

So donโ€™t sweat this tricky job interview question.

Itโ€™s just a fact-gathering tool.

Focus on what you did/produced/learned/valued most and that provided a pathway to give value back to the organization – and talk about how you can leverage ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ด for the benefit of your new (๐Ÿคžfingers crossed for you) employer.
