Why you MUST take the weight of your world OFF your resume

Your resume has one purpose: To get you an interview.
For the job to which you’re applying.

Not for any or every job.

For the job to which you’re applying.

That’s it.

Because your resume is a tool.
A personal marketing tool with one professional function.
To get you an interview for the job to which you’re applying.

That’s it.

your resume has one job

Think of the job opening as the question – and your resume as the answer.

Now imagine what that looks like as a Google search.
On what page of the results is your resume likely to show up?

  1. Have work experience unrelated to or irrelevant for the role?
    • Take it out.
There is nothing about including it that will work in your favor to secure an interview.
  2. Does your professional summary include personal detail unrelated to the role or your career in general?
    • Take it out.
There is nothing about including it that will work in your favor to secure an interview.
  3. Are you including an objective statement, references upon request or an unprofessional email address?
    • Take them out (forever and ever and always, please).
There is nothing about including any of it that will work in your favor to secure an interview.

The purpose of your resume

Your resume has one purpose: To get you an interview – for the job to which you’re applying.
That’s it.

Once you snag the interview, there may be opportunity to tell your personal story and discuss how you juggle your personal and professional responsibilities, how much you like to cook or that you’re studying for your balloon pilot’s license.

But there is nothing about including any of it on your resume that will work in your favor to secure an interview.

Take the burden of carrying the weight of your world off your resume.
That’s not what it’s there for.

Let the document answer the employer’s immediate question – then work the unique magic of you that ONLY you can do … in your interview.
